RIDE? |

Problem
currents can be reduced by keeping close inshore - but that
increases the distance travelled.
Strong
winds can knock a kayak over, but they can be rolled back
up again.
Kayaks are designed to cope with huge waves, there's no problem
in the open sea but there is a danger of being smashed up
against cliffs when hugging the shoreline.
Simon will probably have to deal with the odd tidal race -
groups of waves caused by fast currents - very exciting but
very dangerous!
But apart from all that, it's easy ... (so he says!)

| FACTS |

There
are many different types of kayaks. Here are five examples:
Flat water - long and thin for racing or touring.
River running - shorter and more manoeuvrable.
Sea touring - long and thin (about 17ft by 2ft) but strong
and able to carry equipment in sealed hatches.
Surf - short and manoeuvrable for sea waves.
Rodeo - similar but for big waves on rivers.

| This
is Simon Osborne's dad. The pages that you have created are wonderful, and have
really boosted Simon's enthusiasm. It will be a tremendous help to Si knowing
that the public out there are following him with your updated stories. Many thanks
from a slightly less worried dad.

It's
great to see a local person being supported by the radio station and website while
doing something so positive and raising so much for a needy cause.
Please pass on my best wishes to Simon and good luck with his trip, I've paddled
sea kayaks from places all around the country and know that he will have his work
cut out and lots of excitement on the way.
It seems from the website that Simon has the motivation and determination to succeed,
I shall be keeping up with his progress online with interest and envy.
Wish I could do it! Simon, good luck and take care on the rough bits.

I
have known both Simon and Nigel (his support kayaker) for four years now. I think
that this expedition is a huge undertaking but one that they can achieve.
They have both already excelled in all the pre-departure organisational work they
have done as can be seen by both the money and the publicity that they have raised
so far.
I wish them all the best and urge everyone to donate a little money to Leukaemia
Research Fund, through the Kayaking for Cancer, as this is the whole point of
the expedition and every penny goes to this very worthy cause.
