Kayak man beats Atlantic challenge A south Wales man last year became the first person to cross the Atlantic alone in a kayak.

ROUGH RIDE?

Problem currents can be reduced by keeping close inshore - but that increases the distance travelled.

Strong winds can knock a kayak over, but they can be rolled back up again.

Kayaks are designed to cope with huge waves, there's no problem in the open sea but there is a danger of being smashed up against cliffs when hugging the shoreline.

Simon will probably have to deal with the odd tidal race - groups of waves caused by fast currents - very exciting but very dangerous!

But apart from all that, it's easy ... (so he says!)

FACTS

There are many different types of kayaks. Here are five examples:

Flat water - long and thin for racing or touring.

River running - shorter and more manoeuvrable.

Sea touring - long and thin (about 17ft by 2ft) but strong and able to carry equipment in sealed hatches.

Surf - short and manoeuvrable for sea waves.

Rodeo - similar but for big waves on rivers.

I knew Mark through your Dad and the College Canoe Club. His determination, achievments and cheerful nature amazed me and have always stayed with me.

I'm sure he'd have been extremely proud of his little brother!! Congratulations Matey- I'll look forward to the book!

WELL DONE Si
Everyone at Rummers Wine Bar is very proud of our Si. We hope you enjoyed your welcome home: 'WE DID'.

And well done to all the other Kayakers that joined you along the way, in particular Phil Clegg, who paddled over half of it with you.

Hi Simon & Phil!

Really pleased to hear you have nearly made it all the way home. If you remember, Barbara and Avril promised to have their heads shaved if they raised £500 each towards your fund-raising and they have made it - so the head-shaving will really happen ! Looking forward to seeing you again when we bring the cheque down!

Well done Simon - a really great achievement in a very worthy cause.

Hello there at BBC Shropshire

I'm not sure if I sent you this photo from earlier - I met Simon up near
Mallaig on the West Coast of Scotland and got this photo - it might be
useful for the web site.

I've since met him again at Scarborough on the North East Coast of England
and have just checked the web site this morning and see that he is nearing
the home straight.

Iain Stewart

Cogratulations.  Have been following your progress on the web site since meeting you at Gairloch.

Great achievement well done.

Ian and Syl Theedam
(Welshpool Canoe Club)
