For deaf people who live alone, their disability can be very isolating
and lonely, but a hearing dog can make a huge difference to their
quality of life.
Now
Shropshire has its own fundraising branch for the charity Hearing
Dogs for Deaf People, and BBC Radio Shropshire's Action Desk Producer,
Genevieve Tudor, went along to the launch at the Falcon Hotel in
Bridgnorth to find out a little more.
The
dogs are trained to act as a deaf person’s personal assistant.
Any
dog will do but they must have a great personality, while size and
pedigree really doesn’t matter. In
fact, many hearing dogs are donated or rescue dogs.
After
rigorous training, dogs are matched up with their partner and become
both personal assistant and best friend.
By
now they have learned a whole system of signals to alert their owners
to what’s going on. They’ll let them know when the doorbell rings,
when the alarm clock sounds, or if the smoke alarm goes off - all
the things that hearing people take for granted.
They
really can give a deaf person a whole new quality of life and the
confidence to go out and mix with people, especially if they’ve
felt isolated before.
Barbara
Harris is the chairman of the brand new Shropshire branch and she
can be contacted on 078161 30105. She would love to hear from people
who can help with fundraising, or from people who would just like
to know more.
Meanwhile,
Action Desk Producer Genevieve is busy collecting stamps to help
raise funds and people are welcome to send them in, or drop them
in at BBC Radio Shropshire.
Any
stamps will do - UK or overseas, used or unused, and and people
are welcome to send them in to BBC Radio Shropshire at PO Box 96,
Shrewsbury SY1 3WW, or drop them in at the radio station in Boscobel
Drive, Shrewsbury.
Genevieve
said: "We’ll be collecting for a while yet, but I’ve got a
nasty feeling the Regional Co-ordinator, Yvonne Partridge has some
other ideas for me up her sleeve. She’s already mentioned an ‘It’s
A Knockout' competition but I’ve told her there’s no way I’m doing
a parachute jump - not for anything!".
