Hundreds of people are expected to take to the Severn at Ironbridge on August bank holiday Monday to enjoy the annual coracle regatta. The event takes place 12-4pm on Monday 25 August at Dale End Park in Ironbridge. ![]() Photo by Richard Hammerton Organised by staff at the Green Wood Centre the regatta attracts paddlers from all over the country. Competitors take part in madcap team games and competitions along this picturesque stretch of the River Severn. If you don't mind getting wet there's also an opportunity for first timers to have a go as the Green Wood Centre provides a limited number of coracles, complete with life jackets, for you to try your hand in one of these unusual craft. For those who prefer to watch there'll be a wide range of craft and food stalls, children's activities and demonstrations at the rowing club end of Dale End Park. The Green Wood Centre is home to the Small Wood Association, a national charity that promotes sustainable living through a wood-based economy. The centre runs regular courses in woodland management and crafts. The coracle is a keel-less, flat-bottomed boat made from woven wood, covered with skins or canvas and waterproofed with tar. These unusual looking craft have been used for thousands of years throughout Britain and Europe. Before the Ironbridge was built they would have ferried people and goods across the river. The annual coracle regatta starts at midday on bank holiday Monday 25 August and finishes at 4pm. Entrance is free. For more information contact the Green Wood Centre on 01952 432769 or visit their website.
