The panel consisted of the Conservative leader of the council Peter Nutting, the Labour group leader Danny Moore, the Liberal Democrat group leader Miles Kenny and the independent councillor Claire Wild.
The first topic was the proposal by Shropshire County Council for it to merge with the five district and borough councils in a new unitary council. Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council voted to oppose the proposals, preferring to keep two tiers of local government. Eric Smith asked the four panellists to give their views on whether Shrewsbury would be better off as part of a new authority or going it alone.
Transport is a big issue in the Shrewsbury area, with proposals to trial congestion charging in the town centre and plans for a multi-million-pound north-west relief road. You also raised concessionary bus fares and improvements to rail links, but the debate on transport issues was prompted by a question about how a congestion charge would affect businesses in the town.
Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council claims it's been successful in limiting increases in council tax by careful and efficient management. But that's not enough for some residents, who ask why the tax should go up at all.
A large majority of the Question Time audience in Shrewsbury claimed to be good at recycling. But the borough is failing to meet government targets for the proportion of household waste which is recycled. In a debate about recycling and waste management, you asked what more the council could do to help - and whether household, not commercial, waste should be the focus.
Meole Brace Municipal Golf Course is currently owned and run by the borough council. It's reviewing whether the site should remain as it is, or whether provision for Shrewsbury's golfers should be moved elsewhere. But you wanted to know what the reasons were for the review, in particular whether the course was likely to be developed for housing.
It's been in place since 2004, but the Darwin Gate sculpture still has the power to divide. What did our panel think of the sculpture (said to be Shrewsbury's first new piece of public art in a century), and what role should councils play in creating new artworks? |
