RACHEL is a young hearing woman in her mid-20s. She is hearing, but her parents are deaf and she has extended family who are also deaf. Her uncle, Peter (killed in a fire at the deaf club) was married to Fran. Rachel works in a hotel as a receptionist, and her long-term boyfriend is the chef. They want to own and run their own restaurant. Rachel is basically decent, with few aspirations other than to have an ordinary, comfortable life.

JOCELYN BARKER has an impressive list of credits in television drama, including EastEnders, three seasons of Drop the Dead Donkey, The Bill, Casualty, and Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps. Last year she appeared as Paula in Messiah IV. Jocelyn has also appeared in two films - Too Late and The Secret Rapture - and in 2002 appeared, signing, in a Westlife video!
