Biography

Derek was abandoned as a baby by his mother, Alice, so he lived under the care of his grandparents, George and Moira Henderson.

Alice returned from London to be with him, and they moved into a flat together, trying to make up for the lost years. His mum started drinking again, which threatened to jeopardise their relationship, but he helped her through it and came out the other side wiser and stronger.

He was friends with his ex-girlfriend, Hazel, although her marriage to Vader caused them to grow apart a little.

Derek's life was dramatically altered with the return of his father, Mac, to Shieldinch. With Mac's guidance, Derek applied for university. After a stormy start to their relationship, Deek was delighted when his mum and dad got back together. However, George was not happy with the situation and told Deek that his dad was keeping a secret from him. Derek was horrified when he learned that his dad had had an affair with his gran, Moira!

Initially he wanted nothing to do with either of his parents, although he eventually forgave Mac and moved in with him. He appeared to be going off the rails but has now sorted himself out, and took over the running of the tanning salon from Uncle Raymond. Raymond signed over the deeds of the salon to Deek, but what Deek doesn't know is that Mac bought the salon and asked Raymond to give it to Deek. Deek also ran his own successful coffee kiosk, Deekafe.

Deek's head was turned by Iona but he learned the cold, hard truth: she doesn't fancy him. He started going out with his employee Carly but wasn't as enthusiastic about it as she was.

Deek was pretty disgusted with Alice's drinking but she helped him force Mac away from Nicki. Their relationship improved and Deek was distraught when Alice went to jail. On her release, Deek gave her a room in the flat he shared with Zoe. He was very close to George and was devastated by his death. When the truth emerged that Robert is Alice's real father (and therefore Deek's grandfather), he was appalled by his mum's behaviour and disowned her.

He initially resisted Robert's attempts to bond but went on to trust his new grandfather. It was a terrible shock to find out Robert's true character.
