The Artificial Freestyle Ski Slopestyle Championship, 27 July 2003

This was the first year of the British Freestyle Ski Championship Series, and 30+ of the UK’s most talented freestyle skiers travelled to Hillend to compete.

The Slopestyle coursewaas rejigged after the snowboarding event to suit the skiers, with rails, kickers, hips and grind boxes. The idea for the competitors in Slopestyle is to pick their own line down the course including as many obstacles as possible, performing a solid flow of tricks. The skiers were judged over two runs, from which their overall score was determined to crown the winner in each age group. A super final was then set up to crown the overall Slopestyle champion across age groups.

In the Super Final it was a close battle between two local skiers for second and third place, but in the end senior skier Mark Elliott was pipped from the number two slot by 11-year-old Murray Buchan who threw down a railslide to 360 huckney over the first rail and big air jump, followed by rail-to-revert to railslide on the two box-rails - sheesh!

But no one could beat 16 yr old Mike Wakefield from Sheffield and he only started skiing eight months ago! His Champion run that brought down the house was a railslide to D-spin-7 over the first rail and big air jump to go straight in to a 360 over the hip. He finished off with a smooth rail-to-revert on the box-rail.

*The next AIM Series event will be this season’s first indoor event at Milton Keynes Xscape centre on the 16 August for the Indoor Boarder/ Skiercross and Slopestyle Championships.*
