Dan: brakeless icepick to fakie
How did you get into BMX?
Well originally, I wanted to start mountain biking, but I couldn’t afford all the parts, so I just got myself a £200 bike and got into it through that. Met a few people and kept riding from there.

What kind of thing do you like to ride most?
Pretty much street all the way, but I’ll ride anything really, but mainly street.

What is it about street that gets you going?
I don’t know, I just like the idea that nothing’s the same wherever you go. Just like, one set of steps isn’t the same as another set and one ledge isn’t the same as another, and all the different rails and stuff. Whereas park, to me, a quarter is just a quarter and maybe that’s just me because I don’t ride too much park.

How come you ride brakeless?
Well I’ve been riding brakeless pretty much ever since I started riding, ‘cos pretty much as soon as I got my bike, I
[insert expletive] my brakes, so I took them off, and I’ve just rode brakeless ever since. So I can’t really work a brake, so there’s no point in putting one on.

Do you think that riding brakeless helps you improve certain areas of your riding?
It definitely improves your over all bike control, because you have to get the balance perfect otherwise there’s not much you can do about it. So it definitely improves your over all bike control.

Where are you from originally?
Just north of Aberdeen, in Banff.

What’s the riding like up there?
There’s some not bad street up there, but other than that, there’s
[insert expletive] all really.
