Town to Town More Details
Dumfries

Burns Mausoleum, St Michael's ChurchyardDumfries is an ancient market town set on the broad banks of the River Nith, a few miles from the Solway Firth. Flourishing as a medieval seaport and trading town, it was often invaded by the English army. Despite a long and turbulent history, the strength of the town pulled through every time.

Today it acts as strong administrative support to the region of Dumfries and Galloway and a busy touring base for visitors wanting to explore the wonderful Solway coast. Warm red sandstone buildings add a distinctive charm to the town.

Robert Burns spent his last years in Dumfries. This proud association is reflected by the town's many dedications to the bard; from a statue taking pride of place on the High Street to the many commemorative sights on show.

So whether you stop by Dumfries to see the town in its own right or use it as a convenient stop over, this interesting town will make it worth your while.
