Cycling and Mountain Biking

Cycling is one of the most rewarding ways of getting closer to nature, getting some proper exercise, and immersing yourself in 360 degrees of ever changing stunning Scottish scenery.

Scotland is now one of the top destinations in the world for cycling, be it mountain biking down technically challenging, physically demanding adventure trails or taking a peaceful ride through the breathtaking landscapes of lochs and glens.

Its reputation is partly due to the work of organisations like The Forestry Commission, which has set up mountain bike centres all over the country with trails that can be ridden all year round, and a whole range of routes to suit all abilities.

These projects include the 7stanes project which comprises seven mountain bike centres across southern Scotland, devised in collaboration with Scottish mountain bikers and which has achieved world class status.

The key is to find a location and a route that suits your fitness level and technical ability, having the right equipment, and deciding what kind of experience you're after. Whether it's a guided day tour through towns and villages or an independent trip cross country that may take several days, there's something for everyone.

Go to the Visitscotland website for an excellent guide to routes all over the country, for all abilities from very easy, to very difficult, as well as routes for families.
