The first Mela took place indoors at the Tramway back in 1990. Now based at Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow's West End, it has grown in scale over the years - record crowds of over 20,000 attended in 2006.
The Mela embraces Glasgow's ever-expanding cultural diversity, with music from reggae to Russian folk, from Latin-American beats to pan-African music, Bollywood and bhangra . Guests this year range from Asian vocalist Sukshinder Shinda to classical sitarist Baluji Shrivastav and contemporary favourites Tigerstyle. There is also a wide range of workshops, art displays, dance exhibitions and craft stalls.
