'I know that the twelve notes in each octave and the variety of rhythm offer me opportunities that all of human genius will never exhaust.' Igor Stravinsky
If you’re aged 12–18 and you write your own, original music, Inspire is here to kick start your career as a composer!
Brought to you by the BBC Proms, Inspire is a scheme that will provide you with a friendly environment in which to share ideas, participate in workshops, meet other young composers, get feedback, and ultimately enter the BBC Proms/Guardian Young Composers’ Competition if you like.
BBC Proms Composer Labs
The Composer Labs are a series of workshops held by the BBC Proms team and the BBC orchestras around the UK. They’re a key part of the Inspire scheme. Anyone aged 12 – 18 can come to them, not just those who’ve entered the Young Composers’ Competition. Whether you’re a complete newcomer to music composition or you’re a keen composer looking to share your ideas and discover new ones, you’ll get something out of coming to a Lab.
The lab team will be at Glasgow City Halls on Saturday 8 February 2008, joined by top Scottish composer Stuart MacRae and members of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. The Composer Labs are a chance to join musicians from the BBC orchestras and BBC Singers, top composers and the BBC Proms team in a day of music making, exploration and discovery. Bring your instrument, your latest idea, a rhythm, a melody, a finished work or just a friend. Try things out, question the experts. Attendance at a Lab isn’t compulsory to enter the Young Composers’ Competition (or vice versa), but if you’re thinking of entering, they’re a great way to give you an inspirational kick start!
How do I attend?
It’s easy! All you need to do is contact promslearning@bbc.co.uk or call 020 7765 2679 if you would like to attend any of the Labs. Please tell us your name, age and instrument, which Lab you would like to attend and a contact number, address and/or email address. We’ll take care of the rest. Places are limited so do book early.
