Skara Brae is situated on the very edge of the bay of Skaill on the west coast of Mainland in Orkney. Mainland is the biggest island in Orkney, which lies off the north coast of Scotland.

Skara Brae is a village made up of very ancient single room houses, which was discovered just over 150 years ago. The houses are built from stone and were originally all free standing but some are now partly underground.

Every winter Orkney is battered by storms. In 1850 a great storm blew the sand dunes away and revealed the first stones of Skara Brae.
