The L.A.B wants to work with school and community groups around Scotland who want to develop their digital media skills. You can work with us on a subject or project of your choice across one day or longer. You can also work with us on projects that the BBC needs schools and groups for again for short, medium or long term.
Here are some F.A.Q’s but in the first instance please contact the L.A.B team who will be happy to help.
If you come to us what can you expect from a visit?
It will depend on if you are in the BBC building at Pacific Quay or in your own location. If you are in the BBC you will be given a tour of the building. We ask you to make your own travel arrangements to the BBC and ask you to bring a packed lunch. Workshop times at the BBC are 10am -2pm unless another arrangement has been made.
Is there a charge for workshops?
Workshops at the BBC are free of charge.
How do we book?
Email or phone and speak to a member of the L.A.B staff to see what our availability is. Please note that we cannot guarantee you a workshop place.
Email: labscotland@bbc.co.uk or tel: 0141 422 7005
Can we use material we have already been working on in the classroom or within our group?
Of course ... in fact it's a great idea. Bring ideas, drawings, props and scripts (if you have written them). Let us know if you want to do this in advance and then we can plan together. If you have already done the research it leaves more time for making things. Have a conversation with a team member before you come along. However we cannot make promotional films for groups… the L.A.B is about promoting skills to allow groups to go on and make their own material.
I have some people in the group with special needs ... do you need to know this in advance?
The more information we have about your group the better. It means that activities can be planned with the needs of everyone in mind.
How many can you take in a workshop?
Our maximum number is 20 and our minimum is 6. When a group comes into the BBC there must be a minimum of 2 adult helpers with them.
Do we have to fill in any forms before coming along?
You will have to have parental permission for children to take part in the workshop (just as with any other outing). Release forms will have to be signed by each member of the group, for under 16's a parent/carer will have to sign on the child’s behalf. If there is a problem with anyone having their photo taken or being filmed please let us know before you come along. The release form will be emailed to you when you sign up for the session.
As a condition of the L.A.B. workshops, on application you will be asked to grant permission for BBC Scotland to feature the completed material primarily on the BBC L.A.B website. We only put up a selection of the best of the content made. Our bigger projects may end up on other platforms e.g. television.
What happens to the the material we make on the day?
Firstly we will showcase the material at the workshop, then we will send you a copy of what you make (a form will be sent to you stating the terms and conditions for which this material can be used). We may also put your work on our L.A.B gallery to share with others. Some of the content from the audio workshops may end up being broadcast!
What workshops can we choose?
There are opportunities to do audio, video and animation workshops. In the first instance please contact the L.A.B team about what you have in mind.
Is there anything else we should know?
We want to work with groups who want to progress their knowledge of digital media. We need to work with leaders/ teachers who are prepared to get involved and learn with and develop the group.
Come along expecting to have fun ... and get involved!
