Fractions of a quantity

Boy doing his maths homework.

How do we find 3 \over 5 of 20?

1 \over 5 of 20 is 20 \div 5 = 4

We need 3 \over 5 of 20, so we multiply 4 by 3.

3 \over 5 of 20 = 4 \times 3 = 12.

Method 2 is to multiply 3 \over 5 by 20.

3 \over 5 × 20 = {3 \over 5} \times {20 \over 1} = {60 \over 5} = 12
