The Labour Government will not interfere. They believe in Capitalism. Their policy is not to support 'lame duck' industries - remember Rover, the car manufacturer? It can only get worse with the expansion of the European Union. Even in one of the unemployment blackspots in the UK, there are imigrant workers. I guess there will now be a downward push on the wages. Incidently, I was told you do not need to learn Gaelic in Stornoway. Polish is a better option.

I'm sorry to note that Mr Goldstein missed the point of my piece, namely that the islands are being neglected irrespective of the political hue of the government of the day. Migrant workers are here indeed, filling job vacancies that no-one else will take up. It happened in the Arnish Yard, e.g.. Somebody's got to do it, and they're willing and able. Very highly qualified in many cases. Not commenting on the language point.
