A survey for the railway from Carloway pier to Stornoway by an engineer named Alex MacDonald is dated 1893. Leverhulme bought Lewis in 1918 so he could not have been behind the original proposal. I am interested in what the original scheme was and how far construction got before it was abandoned.

I viewed the plan in Stornoway Library in 1980 - they told me it had been found in a bin in Edinburgh and sent to them. When i was enquiring about thet Waterwork Railway and Lord Leverhulme's or rather his contractor Robert McAlpine's railways, it was produced. However it is interesting to note that route of the line/road is shown on the 2nd edition 1" OS Map surveyed in 1895 and published in 1897. The Leverhulme/McAlpine line was constructed and operated by two 3ft gauge steam locos whose details I have. I have interview an old guy who remembered them back in 1980.
