Pictures from the Isle of Rum

A wee while ago Arnish Lighthouse posted some information about Kinloch Castle on the Isle of Rum. My family and I lived on Rum for three years and it was so nice to see that old friend again that I thought, since there are currently no island bloggers from that isle, I would post some pictures to show what a beautiful place it is. A friend and fellow Rumach once said to me that he thought he would remember his sojourn on the island as being 'the best of times and the worst of times' (he was quoting I know not whom, my dictionary of quotations is useless, or perhaps it's just me) and I thought that pretty well summed it all up. Despite that, I miss it every day.

Scotland is beautiful whilst on my visit my eyes where aching at the sight of so much beauty!!!!!!

Mary Marshall from London

Been trying to put comments on for 3 weeks now - lovely to see Rum again in its full glory.

Arnish Lighthouse from Stornoway

Hope you enjoy it Mary, the autumn was always my favourite time of year on Rum - if you're there for Halloween it's usually a grand party!

BoB from Lewis

Arnish - I know, things on this website are getting a bit difficult really.

BoB from Lewis

That Rumach was me...! If I remember right the quote is from A Tale of Two Cities. Nice pic. October is good - no midges!

Cymro from Grimsay

Hey Cymro, long time no hear! you've been neglecting your blog since...um ...January was it?? Get on with it! T in the Park is no excuse you know!

BoB from Lewis

Rum looks simply amazing. My surname is Kinloch so I almost feel that I should visit Kinloch on Rum as somewhere in the past it would be part of my heritage. Me and two friends are hoping to visit and explore the island sometime soon!

Charlie Kinloch from Lincoln

I had several wonderful holidays on Rhum, My then boyfriend father worked at Kinloch Castle and we visited several times, remember going one year in september for the Harvest Thanks Giving which for such a tiny island was fabulous. Next day(Saturday) we went on a 'Day Trip' (at least thats what we had planned) to Eigg our 'Day Trip' turned into a 3 day nightmare, a storm blew up in the afternoon of the trip and the ferry was not able to return to ths island till the Tuesday! We had only the clothes we stood in, very little money and were soaked to the skin because of the storm even though we were well prepared. Thanks to the hospitality of Eigg folk we were put up in the guest house ran by the Carr family and given hot meals and a bed for the 3 days till we could leave the island. The friendlyness of all the residents of Rhum, Eigg and Canna is second to none, id deffo recommend a visit to all the small isles though perhaps in the summer months apposed to the autumn...

KarenTempleton from Lanarkshire

I loved seeing these photos - they are stunning!!! I lived on Rum for an 'interesting' 18 months!!!

Rach from Inverness

Totally agree with that quote!! Couldn't have summed it up better myself!!!

Rach from Inverness

Worked in Rhum back in April this year had a great time with the people there, such friendlyness and down to earth people. Never saw much of the island, so great to see all these pictures, many thanks for putting them on. Some day i will return, hope to see some good friends again.

Paul Wilson ( Barnies Spark) Wick from Now Back in Aberdeen

Donald admires anyone who can live on Rum for three years. He's tried living on whisky for a lot longer than that but has to give up occasionally to give his liver a break.

calumannabel from Eoropie Distillery Lewis

I was the school teacher on Rum for three years and they were great times! School numbers varied from 7 to 2 over the 3 years with an average of 5 ranging in age from 3 to 11years. Fantastic kids to work with and the community were great at joining in with all the school activities. Don't know who looked forward to the Hallowe'en party, the Christmas plays and the school sports more....the wee kids or the big ones!! Ah...happy days to look back on...if it wasn't for the nonstop rain I might still be there!! Anyway soon off to Lewis for more island adventures!

Lizzy from Aberdeen, soon to be Lewis!

I left Rum earlier this year and miss it lots. good quote though, and great pictures. A strange place but an amazing island. I think the good times out weighed the bad(possibly). Hello to Cymro and to Lizzy.

Niall from Linlithgow

I spent 4 nights on Rhum in the summer of 1993 with a group of students from Wye College in Kent. I mentally 'go back' often & remember the English girls working there for the summer, the red deer & the beautiful Kinloch Castle. An awesome place for sure!

Andrew DeMille from Green Bay, Wisconsin U.S.

Love the photos, espically those of Kilmory. My MacLean ancestors left that village for Canada around 1800.

Eugene Quigley from Nova Scitia

On our way to Rum in April for scrambling and camping. The photos look captivating, thank you for posting them!

Paul, Dave, Rich from Nottingham

Despite Bullough always being said to be the person who first called Rum Rhum but the Rev.Donald MacLean minister of the Small Isles in the OSA in 1794 said Rum "derives its name from the Gaelic word Rhum". No doubt Bullough thought he was changing the name to the correct Gaelic one.

Catherine from Argyll

I thought there was no such word in Gaelic using rh. well that's what i'm telling visitors at the moment, might have to change this!

Jinty from Rum

Nice pictures that give a good feel for the island. I've added a link to them on the Isle of Rum website. www.isleofrum.com An island that has a special magic, casting a spell over all who visit.

george from cargill

I lived on rum from 1983 to 1990, a very happy childhood and a great place to live, I look forward to taking my daughter there one day soon to see what a differant life i had as a child away from the city life! dont miss the midge though!

Richard Jewell from Exeter , Devon

You just missed me Richard! My husband and I went to Rum just after you left so your name is very familiar. It surely gets under your skin that island. My 7 years there were the best. May and Autumn sunrises which turn the whole sky orange, the adorable Rum ponies and mountain goats. Just the simplicity of life on the island recharges the batteries. Everyone should go there at least once in their lifetime.

Midge Curry from Lincolnshire

NICE PICTURES JUST WONDERING IF DERECK AND SANDY ARE STILL ON THE ISLAND

IAN MAC from ABERDEEN

Im going to Rum in the summer, iv been before as a child and it was a nightmare (rain, midges and the boat broke down) but i have heard nothing but good about it so i am looking forward to it. What is the deal with the lodge at Papadil? What is it like, hidden in the trees, it looks quite interesting, but i wont have enough time to go there. Great pictures, cant wait to go

Conor Bolas from Isle of Skye

Hi Ian Sandy is still on Rum but Derek and his family left a couple of years ago. Conor, the bothy at Papadil is just a basic four walls with fireplace but with the most fabulous views. The one at Dibidil is supposedly haunted by the ghost of a fisherman who sits on peoples legs and immobilises them then disappears through the wall (where there used to be a door). Was very sceptical until a 6'4" doctor came into my shop as white as a sheet and asked if I had heard of anything like that happening before. I had - twice!

Midge Curry from Lincolnshire

Planning to go to rum in the summer time for a couple of days. Can't wait going by these pictures .I've taken up camping/hillwalking again at the rip old age of forty. don't know why i've always wanted to visit rum ,I'd been to the orkneys ,arran, colonsay ,gigha, islay to name a few that was twenty odd years ago ,so i'm grateful for you posting the pics looks as if its going to be fantastic. I would be grateful if you got a mo and told me the best must see sites as i will only have a couple of days there thanks :-)

john docherty from glasgow

Brilliant pictures. We were considering visiting Rum this summer and your pictures have helped us make up our minds.

Tejal from London

The pictures of the Isle of Rum are breathtaking. I visited Scotland in the late 70s and wanted to visit both the Islands of Eigg and Rum--so much to do, so little time. It is my understanding that a number of my ancestors once lived there.

D. MacIsaac from Nova Scotia

Great pics Took a party of lads from work therelasy May great break going back next week 3.5.08
