I look forward to getting my Oban times every Thursday and finding out the gossip from home (Tiree). The guy from Scalpay is a Gem, the weeks that he doesnt write in are sad ones. Just noticed its Thursday today and no Oban Times in the post!!! It better arrive tomorrow! :)
Owain from Inverkeithing
Owain, no news this week so here's a classic repeat from 15 July for you. SCALPAY CORRESPONDENT: D MORRISON: BAIT. Creelers are out collecting bait for their creels. One boat recently caught a couple of days' supply at Bogha Bochdaig including mackerel and saithe.HERRING. On Thursday, June 10 the first herring of the year was sold by the fish van on Scalpay. Herring , as well as mackerel, is scarce in home waters at present. POTATO PLOTS. Early or late planted potato seeds planted locally have shown good growth results. COAL TAR. Coal tar and tar were excellent exponents of solving leakage matters on roof tops in former days. Perhaps on was just as good as the other when they dried after painted onto the roof. Archangel tar was also used for medicinal purposes as its smoke, when the tar was boiled, was sniffed by asthmatics for relief.

We take both the Oban Times and the Campbeltown Courier. The latter is a shadow of the former and barely more than something to wrap chips in.
I like scanning the letters pages too, to see if anyone I know if up to anything. I'm also looking for a small boat so the classifieds are high on my list too.

Just for the record I too am a great fan of Our Scalpy correspondant.I add ...what makes him unique in journalism is that all his thinking is done in his own language (gaelic)as he is penning in english. That is the secret in the beauty of his writings. Yes ! Donald Morrison is a one off.The Oban Times will be a poorer paper without him , should he retire or leave us.
Donald bless you ,and may you continue to contribute to our knowledge , amusement and belief that there is such a place as Scalpy, where sanity prevails and the way to the lighthouse is ever accessable to any who wish to go there.
A Baker.
