The Protestant Reformation sweeping Europe arrived in Scotland and opened up a fresh divide in Scottish politics.
Riding the whirlwind was a young Catholic Queen who had not seen Scotland since her infancy.
Her reign would lead to murder and civil war but pave the way for a Scottish king to sit on the throne of England and propose a grand vision – a new nation called Britain.
