On November 27 1996 the first deaths from an E.coli outbreak in Lanarkshire were reported.

The outbreak was subsequently traced back to a butcher's shop in the town of Wishaw, and by early 1997 twenty people, mostly senior citizens, had died, making this the world's worst outbreak of E.coli poisoning.
