The site is divided into two areas, Map Skills and Goggs's Guide Book. There is also a Gallery of pictures. Map Skills gives the user practice in the skills required to use a map. Goggs's Guide Books provides the user with knowledge and understanding of landscape features around the Highlands and Islands and the Central Lowlands and the Southern Uplands of Scotland.

Map Skills:The aim of this section is to introduce the main components of a map though the setting of an imaginary island. Clicking on one of the four components will take the user to that area of the site.

Compass Skills:

Aims to give the user an understanding of the four cardinal compass points and to provide a simple way of remembering them. Two interactive activities follow. These allow the user to practise skills in giving directions and identifying compass points.

Grid References:

Aims to give the user an understanding of how to find a four figure grid reference. Two interactive activities follow. These allow the user to practise skills in finding and giving grid references.

Symbols and Keys:

Aims to give the user an understanding of why a map needs a key and how features are represented on a map using symbols. Two interactive activities follow. These allow the user to practise skills in identifying and using symbols and keys.

Scale:

Aims to give the user an understanding that, on maps, different scales are useful for different purposes. Furthermore, that the smaller the scale the more detailed the map will be. Two interactive activities follow. These allow the user to practise skills in choosing a suitable scale.



These sections can be attempted in any order. At the end of each section the user is presented with a certificate. Each certificate requires the user to enter their name. The certificate can then be printed off and kept as a reminder of the main learning outcome for that section.

Goggs's Guide Books

Goggs's Guide books provides a context for the user to learn about the landscapes of the Highlands and Islands ,the Central Lowlands and the Southern Uplands . The guide books have chapters each looking at a different aspect of the landscape. Clicking on one of the four chapters will take the user to that area of the site.

Highlands and Islands Guidebook

High Lands:

Aims to familiarise the user with a high land landscape by investigating an animated illustration. Maps, photographs and facts provide information about specific areas of high lands.

Islands:

Aims to familiarise the user with Islands surrounding Scotland by investigating an animated illustration. Maps, photographs and facts provide information about specific islands and island groups.

Rivers:

Aims to familiarise the user with the journey of a river by investigating an animated illustration. Maps, photographs and facts provide information about specific rivers.

Lochs and Seas:

Aims to familiarise the user with the landscapes of Lochs and Seas by investigating an animated illustration. Maps, photographs and facts provide information about specific lochs and seas.


The chapters can be tackled in any order. At the end of each chapter the users can print out a map giving them information on the landscape feature they have been learning about. They can then return to contents page and try another chapter.


Central Lowlands Guidebook

Central Lowlands:

Aims to familiarise the user with the main features of the Central Lowlands. A checklist, maps, photographs and facts provide information about specific areas of the Central Lowlands.

Edinburgh:

Aims to familiarise the user with some of the main areas in Edinburgh. A checklist, maps, photographs and facts provide information on and location of specific areas of the city.

River Forth:

Aims to familiarise the user with some of the main features of the River Forth, both natural and man made. A checklist, maps, photographs and facts provide information on and location of specific aspects of the river.

Glasgow:

Aims to familiarise the user with some of the main areas in Glasgow. A checklist, maps, photographs and facts provide information on and location of specific areas of the city.

River Clyde:

Aims to familiarise the user with some of the main features of the River Clyde, both natural and man made. A checklist, maps, photographs and facts provide information on and location of specific aspects of the river.

East Lothian:

Aims to familiarise the user with some of the main areas in East Lothian. A checklist, maps, photographs and facts provide information on and location of specific areas of the city.


The chapters can be tackled in any order, but it's recommended that they start with the Central Lowlands introduction tour. At the end of each chapter the users can then return to contents page and try another chapter.


Southern Uplands Guidebook

Hills:

Aims to familiarise the user with the main features of the hills in the Southern Uplands. A map, photographs and facts provide information on and location of specific hills in the Southern Uplands.

Forests:

Aims to familiarise the user with some of the main forests/forest parks in the Southern Uplands and how they are used. A map, photographs and facts provide information on and location of specific forests.

Coastline and Rivers:

Aims to familiarise the user with some of the main features of the coastline of the Southern Uplands. A map, photographs and facts provide information on and location of specific aspects of the coastline and the River Tweed.

Market Towns

Aims to familiarise the user with some of the features of a Market Town. A map, photographs and facts provide information on and location of specific market towns in the Southern Uplands.

The chapters can be tackled in any order. At the end of each chapter the users can then return to contents page and try another chapter or play the Gogg-biking game.

Gallery
The Gallery is a place where users of the site can send in photographs and pictures of landscape features in their area.

Help Icons
There are two help icons featured in the site that can be clicked on at any time for assistance.

The 'T' symbol on the pages is for the teacher/parent. This calls up a page detailing the main aims of that particular page or section.

The help icon for the user is an eye that can be seen at the top right hand corner of each page. Clicking on the icon provides the user with simple text and audio help on how to use a particular page or tackle a particular activity.
