1945: Labour government
elected with a ‘collectivist’ view on health care: that the Government
should take the major responsibility for the country’s health.
1948: Creation of
the National Health Service (NHS).
Aims of NHS:
a) to provide equal health care to all, regardless of age, sex or occupation.
b) to provide this service free of charge at the point of use.
c) to promote good health, rather than only treat bad health.
On July 5th 1948 the
new National Health Service starts providing hospital and specialist services,
medicines, drugs and appliances, care of the teeth and eyes, maternity services...
