After Mary was beheaded at Fotheringhay, all traces of her and her belongings were burnt. This was to stop them becoming relics for her Catholic supporters around the world. Although never close to Mary, when her son, James, became king of England he had Fotheringhay Castle pulled down. Today, nothing remains of it.
