The
news of the arrival of an emigrant agent soon spread through every
glen of the district. By Monday morning, thousands of Highlanders
gathered at the Caledonian Hotel anxious to quit Scotland and to
go to Australia to take over its unlimited lands. While we are saddened
that so many active men feel they have to leave Scotland, the Highlands
will benefit by losing some of its surplus population.
The
Inverness Courier, 30th May 1838, reporting the arrival of an emigration
agent in Fort William
