Volcanoes - Cause
The Soufrière Hills Volcano began its eruption on the 18 July 1995. Find and select the 3 hotspots on the map of Montserrat to discover what caused the eruption.
The crust of the earth is split into separate blocks called plates. These plates move slowly by floating on a thin layer of hot semi-liquid rock called the mantle. Where the plates meet is called a plate boundary. Montserrat is situated on a boundary between the Caribbean plate and the Atlantic plate. These two plates are slowly moving together causing the dense oceanic plate to be forced under the continental plate.
