Volcanoes - Cause
The Soufrière Hills Volcano began its eruption on the 18 July 1995. Find and select the 3 hotspots on the map of Montserrat to discover what caused the eruption.
Before an eruption, magma gathers under the volcano until the pressure is so great that it is forced up through cracks to the surface of the earth. Soufrière Hills Volcano produces a thick sticky lava called andesite. It builds up at the top of the volcano in a dome until it becomes so heavy that it collapses into pyroclastic flows. A mixture of hot rocks, gases and ash flow down the side of the volcano at extremely high speeds, similar to an avalanche.
