Inverness is
built on the narrow coastal flood plain of the River Ness and its tributaries.
Since the 1950s the city has almost doubled in size. The surrounding flood
plain has been developed to build new houses. In built-up areas there are
a lot of impermeable surfaces. Impermeable surfaces do not allow rainfall
to be absorbed into the land. This increases the chance of the land flooding.
