Ask a Teacher - Geography - Physical - A Question from Stephanie

Student Name Stephanie
Question What exactly is a misfit stream and how is it formed and identified on an OS map?
Answer

A mis-fit stream is a river flowing through a u-shaped valley. It is called a mis-fit to signify that the river did not create the valley it flows through.

It can be identified on an OS map by a blue line flowing along a white valley floor. Have a look at the images on this web page to help you understand.
