Ask a Teacher - Geography - Physical - A Question from Steven

Student Name Steven
Question Can you explain leaching and shifting cultivation in simple terms?
Answer

Leaching is the movement of water through soil, taking with it chemicals and minerals. Constant leaching can make a soil acidic.

Shifting cultivation, in this agricultural system, a patch of land is cleared, crops are grown and the patch is then deserted until the soil regains its fertility, whilst another area is cleared. With growing populations, the period an area is left fallow is getting considerably shorter, reducing the fertility of the land.
