| Question |
I am having problems in identifying glacial and river features in OS maps and I know they are really important in the exams. I have the patterns in my jotter but it is so different trying to find them in the maps. What should I do?

| Answer |
Recognising physical features on an OS map using contours can be difficult. Do remember however the map gives you clues to find features:
1. River valleys will have a blue coloured river with its name running along the bottom.
2. River often flows across farmland and meanders/ox-bow lakes can be more easily seen.
3. The names of river features are written in blue of the map - waterfall
4. A glacial u-shaped valley will have a river flowing through the bottom of it but the floor will have no contours.
5. Look for the name 'corrie' on the map it will be near the top of a mountain.
6. When looking for pyramidal peaks look for the highest points on the map shown by spot heights. Also the name of the mountain will be in bold writing.
