Ask a Teacher - Geography - Physical - A Question from Gillian

Student Name Gillian
Question What is the difference between lateral and vertical erosion?
Answer Lateral erosion is from side to side in a valley while vertical is up and down. So a river will cut downwards in to the landscape by vertical erosion to create a v-shaped valley but later in its course the river will cut in a side ways fashion e.g. in the creation of a meander by lateral erosion.
