Ask a Teacher - Geography - Physical - A Question from Sarah

Student Name Sarah
Question I have to match up definitions of limestone features with the names of the features. Could you please give me a definition of a doline, a pothole, a cave, and a tufa?
Answer Doline - A steep-sided and flat-floored depression in karst country.
Pothole - Cylindrical holes drilled into the bed of a river by turbulent high velocity water loaded with pebbles. Though I think you are referring to a swallow hole which is a vertical or near-vertical shaft down which a stream disappears in areas of limestone topography.
Cave - an enlarged shaft through the limestone.
Tufa - A deposit of calcium carbonate found where it is precipitated from a water source.
