| Answer |
1. Water erodes by wearing away the surface of the land by attrition, corrosion, hydraulic action and chemical action.
2. An ox-bow lake is a horseshoe-shaped lake, made by an old meander being cut off from a river.
3. Rivers rarely flow in straight lines. The formation meanders is liked to pools ( deep water and riffles (shallow water). In order to avoid the riffles, the main current swings from side to side. The maximum flow is directed to one side of the river causing erosion and formation of a river cliff while on the other side the river flow is slower causing deposition and the formation of a river beach. Meander/oxbow lake diagrams can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/education/bitesize/standard/geography/rivers/river_forming_rev3.shtml
4. Waterfalls form as a river flows over hard and soft rock. The soft rock erodes more quickly. The river undercuts the hard rock leaving an overhang. The river forms a plunge pool below the waterfall. The over-hanging hard rock weakens and falls into the plunge pool. The waterfall moves upstream. The process begins all over again. Waterfall diagrams can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/scotland/education/bitesize/standard/geography/rivers/river_forming_rev2.shtml
5. The highest waterfall is the Angel Falls; Carrao River, Venezuela, Total height of the falls is 97.90m (3212feet) with the largest single fall of 75.22m (2468feet).
6. Longest river is the River Nile at 4145 miles or 6670kms.
7. South America's Amazon River is the world's largest because it carries more water to the sea than any other river. The Amazon's discharge at its mouth is approximately 7 million cubic feet per second. The Amazon is the world's second longest river as well, coming in just a tad shorter than the Nile River at 4,049 miles (6,516 kilometres) long.
