Question
What are the out of town retail changes? what are the advantages
and disadvantages of it?
Answer
Out of town retail changes is the growth in edge of city shopping
centres and retail parks.
The advantages of such developments are that the company can build
a large centre with plenty of parking space and easy access from
existing roads and motorways to attract people from a wide area.
In other words the shopping centre will have a large sphere of influence
and thus attract people and their spending money away from other
less accessible shopping areas e.g. - city/town centres.
They provide a wide range of facilities in addition to shopping
e.g. entertainment - cinema. ; cheap petrol ; fast food restaurants
..........
The centre is likely to be covered - air conditioned in summer and
heated in winter - providing an all year round pleasant shopping
environment.
It provided shoppers with a wide range of shops which allows easy
comparison of goods.
The disadvantages
if such developments go ahead are the loss of farmland, areas of
natural beauty, increased use of cars to travel to work ( traffic
congestion, pollution, accidents)- therefore higher demand for more
roads leading into the city. All these are clearly seen in cities
like Glasgow & Edinburgh.
In addition large cities lose council tax money as instead of paying
to the city the money is paid to the surrounding councils.
