Science

Science is the new rock 'n' roll. OK, maybe not, but we still think it's pretty neat. And that's why Standard Grade Bitesize and Schools WebGuide have spent days trolling through the latest and greatest in science websites to bring you (drum roll, please) HOT LINKS! If you want more science-related information for your revision or projects, check out our links below.

BBC Science & Nature
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn
Various science themes including hot topics and tv & radio follow ups.

BBC WildFacts
http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts
BBC Nature's rapidly-growing database of facts and figures about animals - their vital statistics, habits, habitats and global distribution. Includes images, video and audio.

BrainPOP
http://www.brainpop.com/
A wonderful site for revision on a whole range of science and technology topics at key stage 4 from genetics to waves. Choose a topic and whilst the short 'movie' loads you get the opportunity to answer multiple-choice quiz questions.

People and Discoveries
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aso/databank/
A databank of 20th century scientists, their stories and discoveries. The subject areas are physics and astronomy, human behaviour, medicine and health, earth and life sciences, and technology.

The Why Files (The Science Behind The News)
http://whyfiles.org/
If a science-related topic appears in the news, for example, a new discovery in medicine or a space event, this site attempts to explain the science behind it. Great background for all science classes.

SSERC
http://www.sserc.org.uk
This is a must for those with an interest in science. There is a members section which is accessible by teachers. However fear not science buffs there is plenty of other stuff to interest you. Everything from a recipe for slime to a section which allows you to be a cheerleader (all in the interest of science of course!) Good links to other science sites here.

How Stuff Works
http://www.howstuffworks.com/
How Stuff Works is a great place to come to learn about how things work. Want to know how a car engine works or how household appliances like fridges and toilets work? Here's the place to find out! Each weekday Marshall Brain answers questions submitted by the readers of How Stuff Works in the Question of the Day section. This a child friendly site suitable for children in the upper stages of primary school and secondary schools. Also highly addictive for adults!

Volcano World
http://volcano.und.nodak.edu/
This site is supported by NASA and contains information on all aspects of volcanoes. There's an excellent 'Kids' Door' section which includes virtual field trips and school project ideas. In the 'Teaching and Learning' section there are lesson plans for teachers, activities for pupils and links to other sources of information about volcanoes. Suitable for teachers in primary and secondary schools.

NASA Homepage
http://www.nasa.gov/
A very comprehensive site containing up-to-date information on NASA science and technology. Includes a good selection of links to related sites.

The Association for Science Education Scotland
http://www.asescotland.org.uk/
The Scottish branch of the on-line site of teachers helping teachers to teach science. ASE promotes and develops science education from primary through to secondary levels. Follow the link to the nationwide ASE site to find the 'Teacher Zone', a really useful resource which includes information on Teachers' Resources and other Science Links
