line graphicSound Advice
SuccessfulScottish novelist, AL Kennedy, offers some words of encourgement for those interested in the literary life.

Things to consider when writing:

As a writer you are savagely self-employed - remember to be a good employer.

If you find anyone else who cares about helping your work achieve its best possible form, make use of their time mercilessly.

Not all the advice you get will be good, no matter who gives it, but at least listen to it and find out why you disagree.

Anyone who gives you notes is doing you a favour - you may not like them, but do read them, even if they sting a little.

Feel free to break any rules you may be given - but you might also find out why they're there.

Remember your voice is like no other - it is your responsibility to pursue its development. It is your responsibility to improve your skills and to realise that this is a life-long process.

Mean every word and know what every word means. Remember you're doing this because you love it, because you can't help it, because it is a part of you and a part of something very fine which has decided to come to you to be expressed.
