William Soutar - ‘The Auld Tree’
Soutar is best known for comical verses that appeal to both children and adults, although to categorise him solely as a children’s writer would be a disservice to the great literature that he produced. Soutar often uses fantastical symbols and metaphors, which seem to hark back to bygone age of poetry and balladry, to voice his concerns about the state of the nation of Scotland, and ‘The Auld Tree’ is such a poem.
