Hamish Henderson - Elegies for the Dead in Cyrenaica
Known for his work in collecting folksongs, his radical socialism, and his heroic deeds during the Second World War, Henderson lived an action-packed and idealistic life, and this comes through strongly in the lines of his poems. Elegies for the Dead in Cyrenaica (1948) is a superb lyrical outpouring on the war, where Henderson, despite his experiences, can still extend his hand in friendship and sympathy to fellow soldiers despite their nationality. The desire for peace and internationalism is ever-present.
