How to sew a button heart

By Leah Halliday, from Living and crafting the vintage lifestyle.

Button heart

Basic sewing skills required; if you don't have these then get yourself along to a local craft group or watch How to Sew a Button (youtube.com).

Materials

Sewing materials - buttons, tape measure, wire, scissors and pliers

Thread the buttons

Cut the wire to approx 25cm, then thread the first button on from the back. Bend the wire down into the hole and leave about 2½ cm at the end.

As you thread the buttons on keep the wire tension tight and make sure each button is pressed as close as possible to the next one.

Lining up buttons

Position the buttons

Position a smaller button about half way through and make one length of wire one small button longer than the other side.

Put the two ends together and give the wire 3 or 4 twists to secure it before snipping the ends off.

Shape the heart

Finished button heart

Shape into the heart with the small top button becoming the middle point of the heart.

Take approx 36 cm of ribbon, fold in half and hook round the back of the middle button, tie a knot, then a double knot at the top.

Hang up and enjoy your handywork!
