World War II meant a reduction in our output,
with no regional services. We merged with the BBC Home Service until 29
July 1945. During the war, we received an unexpected visit from Rudolf
Hess, the first woman announcer in Scotland was appointed, Elizabeth Adair,
and Workers' Playtime broadcast their 200th edition from the West of Scotland,
starring Vera Lynne, Ted Ray and Foster and Clarke. When we resumed the
Scottish Home Service, forces programmes were replaced with light programming.
We brought the first Edinburgh festival in 1947 to homes across Britain
and, in 1949, the first live broadcast from Shetland.
