Dr Finlay's Casebook began on 16 August 1962 and told the story of Dr Finlay and his life in Tannochbrae. It was based on a character created by A.J. Cronin and broadcast until 1971.

Finlay, a hard-up young medical student in Glasgow in 1928, was played by Bill Simpson, already well-known in Scotland as a newsreader. His mentor, Dr Cameron, was played by Andrew Cruickshank and housekeeper, Janet, Barbara Mullen.
