Series One

We look back at the first series and revisit its highs and lows.

We look back at the first series and revisit its highs and lows.

Just the Two of Us began as it would carry on with a mixture of great and not-so-great performances.

In show one, Matt and Jocelyn Brown wowed with I Knew You were Waiting, but the act that totally stopped the show - for all the wrong reasons - was Penny Smith singing When I Fall in Love, with Curtis Stigers. "Penny, you didn't carry the tune now, did you?" were Stewart Copeland damning words.

But despite Penny and Curtis coming bottom with the judges, it was Gaby Roslyn and Martin Fry who were first to leave the show. "It was totally justified," said Gaby.

It was then a question of a little bit of history repeating... In show two, three and four Penny and Curtis once again came bottom with Lulu and co, but not with the viewers

First Fiona Bruce and Alexander O'Neal, then Matt Allwright and Jocelyn Brown sang their last notes in the competition. "Where was the pain?" asked Lulu about Fiona's country version of Sometimes When we Touch. "It's getting a bit samey," said former Matt and Jocelyn number-one fan Stewart.

Show Five saw Penny and Curtis showing a marked improvement, meaning that although they tied with Nicky Campbell and Beverley Knight in bottom place, they were once again not the ones to leave competiton. Could nothing stop these two songbirds?

The answer was 'yes' for in show six their renditions of On The Street Where You Live and Bang a Gong were both not a hit but a miss with the judges - "I think it would be a gross injustice to everyone else on the stage if you are in the final," said Cece Sammy. Fortunately, the viewers agreed.

This left Mark Moraghan and Natasha Hamilton, Chris Fountain and Jo O'Meara, and Sian and Russell fighting it out for a place in the final. In a shock result it was consistantly praised pair Chris and Jo who were voted off.

"I promised my mum I wouldn't cry on national TV," said a gutted Chris. "I think we did really well to get where we are," said Jo. "I couldn't have asked for a better partner," added Chris.

In the final Sian and Russell continued to prove the darkhorses of the competition, coming in from the middle of the field to capture the public's imagination.

"I think that was an absolute revolution... sing it loud, sing it proud, " said Lulu. The nation agreed and once the votes were counted they were named Just the Two of Us Champions.
