Albert Einstein

German-born physicist Albert Einstein famously got his first proper job as a clerk in the patent office in Bern, Switzerland. However, after publishing a series of important papers in 1905, Einstein rose to fame as a scientist. His revolutionary theories of special and general relativity became fundamental to modern physics.

Einstein won the Nobel prize in 1921 for his explanation of the photoelectric effect, but never won one for his work on relativity.
