Key places

Places across the Universe have played an important part in our understanding of its workings. There's an old joke that much of astronomy involves studying the Crab Nebula, which is important because astronomers think it is the remains of a supernova that was seen from the Earth in the year 1054.

This section gathers together some of the important, often stunningly beautiful objects that have featured in BBC astronomy coverage over the years.
