'During the conflict the RAMC dealt with no fewer than nine million sick and wounded soldiers, two million of them on the Western Front alone. Over all fronts, six million casualties were moved from the front line battle area to bases by stretcher-bearers, ambulance and hospital trains, of whom 2,258,000 were shipped home from France and nearly two million returned, more or less fit to the firing line.'
