Soldier Objects

Gas masks were worn to help prevent the harmful damage that could be caused by poison gas. Exposure to gas could cause burns, temporary blindness and the lungs to dissolve. When gas was first used some soldiers covered their mouths with socks or rags soaked in urine to help fight against its effects.
