Observer

Saturday, August 15

A rumour among the semi-educated and those who have relations or friends in the regiment is spreading that the Black Watch have been cut up and half the regiment wiped out in Belgium... The Press Bureau officially states these rumours of victories or reverses are baseless and they will publish all successes or reverses as soon as possible after they take place. But the rumour of the destruction of the Black Watch is now to be heard anywhere-in a bus, or post-office. Also the semi-educated public persist in the rumour that we had landed troops in Belgium before war was declared.
