Observer

Monday, Bank Holiday, August 3 (continued)

He said England would suffer as much if she stood aside as if she took part in the war. He said if we listened to those who wished us to remain neutral, we should lose all respect of all nations.

Germany declared war against France.

There were crowds in Whitehall, Downing Street and by Buckingham Palace all day. Very orderly, but a feeling of nervousness as to whether the Government would play the game and support France. The King and Ministers greatly cheered. Relief among the more educated that England would take her part, but fear among the poor at the rise of price of food and the time the war might last.

Banks are to remain closed until Friday.
